Migraine With Aura Treatment Manhattan

Expert Gonstead chiropractic care for chronic migraines and visual disturbances. Dr. Ryan Suh provides precise spinal adjustments that address the root cause of your migraine symptoms.

If you're suffering from chronic migraines with aura—where you experience blurred vision, see only half of someone's face, or have areas that are completely blacked out until the migraine takes its course—you understand how debilitating these symptoms can be. These aren't just headaches. They're neurological events that can steal hours or days from your life.

At Specific Chiropractic in Manhattan, I've treated patients who have suffered with migraines for 40 years or more. Using the Gonstead technique, I don't just address your pain—I investigate the structural cause. When your spine is knocked out of alignment, it irritates nerves and triggers your body's defense mechanisms: muscle spasms, swelling, and inflammation. For migraine sufferers, this often means pain radiating from one side of the head down through the neck and shoulders, pressure behind the eyes, and those terrifying visual disturbances.

Here's what most people don't understand: your migraines likely aren't starting in your head. Through comprehensive X-ray analysis, thermal scanning, and precise palpation, I trace the problem back to its source—whether that's a rotated pelvis throwing your entire spine into compensatory curves, a stuck sacroiliac joint creating instability, or cervical misalignments irritating the nerves that control vision and blood flow to your brain. Once we identify and correct these foundational issues, your body can finally heal.

Why the Gonstead Method Works for Migraine With Aura

When I examine a migraine patient, I'm looking for specific findings that tell me exactly where the problem is. I'm checking for muscle tightness on one side of the neck (your body pulling hard to rebalance a misaligned vertebra), swelling and pitting edema (where my finger sinks into the tissue because of inflammation), heat patterns that indicate damaged tissue and increased vascular supply, and restricted movement in specific vertebrae that should be mobile.

🔍

Five-Part Analysis System

I don't guess. I use visualization of your posture and gait, instrumentation to detect abnormal heat patterns, static palpation to find swelling and muscle knots, motion palpation to identify stuck vertebrae, and full-spine X-rays to see your exact structural alignment in 3D.

🎯

Foundation-First Correction

Your spine is like a building—if the foundation is twisted, everything above compensates. I start at your pelvis and sacroiliac joints, correcting rotation and sinking before addressing your neck. This prevents your spine from snapping right back into misalignment.

🧠

Brainstem & Nerve Focus

The C5 cervical level controls nerve innovation to your eyes, ears, and the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems. When I adjust this level, patients often report immediate changes in eye pressure, vision clarity, and even the ability to see details they couldn't see moments before.

📊

Disc & Joint Assessment

I identify disc damage where the nucleus pulposus has shifted backwards, creating that characteristic circle shape on X-ray. These backward-shifted discs compress nerves and contribute to your symptoms. I also check if your occiput (skull) is rotated, potentially irritating your brainstem.

Immediate Feedback

After adjustments, I have you walk around and report changes. Many patients notice their low back feels looser, neck pressure decreases, eye pressure reduces, and blurriness improves—sometimes seeing eye chart lines they needed glasses for just minutes earlier.

🛡️

Specific Adjustments Only

I overlay X-ray data with physical findings to determine exactly which vertebrae need adjustment. No unnecessary manipulation. If your occiput is compensating for problems below, I address the foundation first and let your body self-correct when possible.

My Gonstead Examination Process for Migraine Patients

Every migraine patient receives the same thorough, systematic evaluation. Here's exactly what happens when you come to my office:

1

Gonstead Visualization: Spotting Structural Misalignment

Before I even touch you, I'm observing how you walk, how you carry yourself, and your overall posture. I explain what I'm looking for: when a structure gets knocked out of alignment, it irritates nerves and triggers defense mechanisms. Your muscles will work hard to pull your head or spine back into proper alignment, creating tightness on one side and looseness on the other. I'm also looking for swelling where damaged tissue creates an inflammatory response as your body tries to repair and stabilize.

2

Static Palpation: Finding the Swelling and Muscle Spasms

I palpate your spine feeling for muscle knots, tightness, and pitting edema (where my finger traces into the tissue and it sinks). When I find a huge knot or significant swelling at a particular level, I mark it. For migraine patients, I often find muscle spasms on both sides of the neck, indicating something unstable at that level. I'm checking your sacroiliac joints, lumbar spine, thoracic spine, and cervical spine—every level matters.

3
3

Instrumentation Scan: Pinpointing the Root Cause

I scan your spine with a specialized instrument that detects abnormal heat temperature. When damaged tissue occurs and inflammation happens, your body increases vascular supply to the area, creating more heat. This device helps me identify those exact levels of nerve interference that might be contributing to your migraines.

4

Motion Palpation: Testing What's Moving and What's Stuck

I check each joint individually. I'll test your left sacroiliac joint—it should move freely. Then your right SI joint—and often in migraine patients, I find it's completely locked up, not rotating or extending at all. I check each lumbar vertebra: L5 stuck, L4 stuck, L3 moving, L2 stuck. In your neck, I check each cervical level and the occiput. When I find a level that feels like a brick wall or doesn't move at all, that's telling me something important.

5

X-Ray & Neurological Analysis: The Complete Picture

Now I piece all the data together with X-ray analysis. I'm looking at how your spine curves—if it's curving to one side, it's likely twisted. I trace your spine from top to bottom, looking for compensatory patterns. I analyze your pelvis: is it sinking down on one side? Rotating? Is it narrower on one side, indicating backward rotation? I check disc integrity—looking for that telltale circle shape where the nucleus pulposus has shifted backwards. I examine your occiput to see if it's rotated relative to your atlas, because the brainstem goes through the foramen magnum and any misalignment here can irritate the front or back part of the brainstem.

6

Specific Gonstead Adjustments: Foundation First

I adjust from the bottom up. If your pelvis is rotated and sinking, that's where we start—because when we untangle the spine from the foundation, everything above can realign naturally. I'll adjust your sacroiliac joint, address stuck lumbar vertebrae, correct thoracic issues (T6 is particularly important for autonomic nervous system function), and perform precise cervical adjustments only where needed. Each adjustment is specific to the exact misalignment I've identified.

7

Immediate Re-evaluation and Lifestyle Guidance

After adjustments, I have you walk around and give me feedback. What feels different? How's the neck? Any changes in eye pressure or vision? Then I provide specific protocols—like cold pack application to reduce swelling—and lifestyle modifications including posture correction, ergonomic changes, and exercises to support your spinal health between visits.

Real Patient Results: What You Can Expect

Let me share what happened with a recent patient who suffered from chronic migraines for 40 years. His migraines started on the right side, radiated down to his neck and shoulders, and sometimes went to his left eye where it would become blurry and he could only see half of people's faces—the other half completely blacked out until the migraine took its course.

During examination, I found exactly what I expected: huge muscle knots on the right side of his neck, pitting edema at specific cervical levels, swelling at the right sacroiliac joint, and restricted movement throughout his spine. His right hip wasn't moving at all—completely locked up. Several lumbar vertebrae were stuck. The T6 level showed significant issues. The C5 cervical level was severely restricted.

On X-ray, I saw his pelvis was rotated and sinking on the right side, creating compensatory curves all the way up his spine. Multiple discs showed that backward nucleus pulposus shift. His occiput was slightly rotated. Interestingly, his history revealed he played football (soccer) and was a powerful kicker—I could see where his quad muscles and groin muscles had literally tried to yank right off the bone from the force of his kicks, creating jagged changes on the X-ray.

After the first adjustment—correcting his pelvis, addressing key lumbar and thoracic levels, and adjusting C5—he immediately reported feeling lighter and easier. The pressure from his shoulder to his head was gone. The eye pressure was "much easier." And then he said something remarkable: "I can actually see the bottom line, number 16 on the eye chart, and usually I need glasses for that. The blurriness is gone."

At his follow-up visit one week later, he reported: "Much better. Less headache. The pressure around my neck and skull is gone. My eyesight—the blurriness is off. A lot of relief." Most importantly: "I haven't had a serious migraine in a week, which was wonderful." For someone who usually went no more than two weeks between severe attacks, this was life-changing progress after just one adjustment.

Understanding the C5 Connection

The C5 cervical level is particularly important for migraine patients because it deals with nerve innovation—both parasympathetic and sympathetic—to your eyes, ears, and hearing. This is why some migraine patients also experience auditory issues and vision problems. When I adjust this level and restore proper nerve function, the results can be immediate and dramatic, just like the patient who suddenly could read the eye chart without glasses.

Why the Occiput Matters

The occiput (where your skull meets your spine) houses your brainstem, which extends down into your neck. The brainstem goes through the foramen magnum—the big hole at the base of your skull—and it needs to be positioned correctly. When the skull misaligns and rotates, it can irritate either the back part or front part of the brainstem, contributing to neurological symptoms like migraines with aura. However, I prefer to correct foundational problems first, as many occiput misalignments are compensatory and will self-correct once the spine below is properly aligned.
