Colic, Gassy Infant / Baby
Babies are cute, aren’t they? Until they start wailing and crying non-stop for hours and hours no matter what you do to try to soothe them.
As a new father, I had the pleasure to experience the joys of having a first child and the struggles too. Sleep… oh how I cherish you!
There are two components to getting Colic and gas under control.
Infants have immature nerve systems that are in development. Birth can be a traumatic thing for your baby. As the baby comes out the birth canal, they rotate naturally to let one shoulder then the next shoulder to come out of the birth canal. OB/midwife may help along this process by rotating the baby’s head. Excessive force may be applied which may cause the vital structure in the neck to structurally shift out of alignment. A structural shift may cause nerve interference to the brain stem which controls everything that’s automatic such as breathing, heart beating, digestion, so and and so forth. If there’s nerve interference that affects digestion, the baby may have difficulty processing milk and the byproduct is gas. Correcting the structural shift, restoring nerve function allows the baby to process and digest milk. Reducing gas = reducing colic.
How do you know if your child as a structural shift in the upper part of the neck causing nerve interference to the brain stem? One of the indicators I use to identify an upper cervical structural shift causing nerve interference is to observe the base of the skull.
Nerve interference at that region of the neck causes inflammation that’s visible.
Babies can also have a structural shift in their foundation or elsewhere in the spine that needs to be evaluated by a trained chiropractor in structural correction.
With all pregnant mothers in my practice, it’s always been my honor as a NYC Gonstead Chiropractor to check their precious baby’s nerve system to ensure it’s functioning at optimal level and minimize colic. A specific Gonstead Chiropractic adjustment for a baby is very gentle and safe.
2. Food source
If you have the unfortunate situation of supplementing feeding like us, there’s an additional problem. Most cow’s milk are not safe to consume. Majority of cows in USA produce A1 beta casein milk which breaks down and produces BCM7. BCM7 is inflammatory, increases your risk of heart problems, brain fog, poor thinking, digestive issues, and other neurological issues. A2 beta casein milk is safe to drink which doesn’t produce BCM7. You’ll find all milks in supermarket, regardless if it’s organic or not, they all have A1 milk. All baby formulas are also made out of A1 milk, whether it’s organic or not. With our son, A1 milk caused severe gas and experimenting with different formula brands caused different types of rashes or other allergic issues due to the preservatives and other cheap fillers they put in there.
A) Le Leche League – Human babies need human breast milk, this organization helps arrange parents access to human breast milk. Depending where you are in the country, this may be reasonably priced or in NYC can be pricey per ounce.
B) Buy A2 milk at your local dairy farmer that milks from Guernsey cows or other cows that produce exclusively A2 milk. Problem? May be a challenge to locate a dairy farmer that has that particular cow.
C) A2 Milk from Fresh Market supermarket. They are currently the only supermarket carrying A2 milk.
D) Buy A2 baby formula imported from Europe or Australia. A2 Platinum Premium Infants Baby Formula. Due to strict FDA regulation, infant formula must pass stringent tests otherwise it cannot be sold in USA. Their product is undergoing testing for FDA approval. International shipping can be pricey.
E) Goat’s milk. It’s mostly A2 milk but it does have some A1. Goat’s milk is the closest resemblance to human breast milk, more so than cow’s milk although lacking some vitamins and minerals. You can buy Goat’s milk at your local supermarket, I recommend buying Goat’s milk formula which is sterilized and has all the ingredients necessary for infants like Kabrita Goat’s Milk for toddler’s. Again, due to FDA regulation, Kabrita can’t sell a specific infant formula until it passes strict testing, their product is also undergoing testing for FDA approval.
Which ever food choices you decide, you may consider Lactase enzyme drops. It helps break down the lactose sugar and helps produce less gas. Lactose drops requires to be cool at all times so keep it in the refrigerator. Use 1 drop per 4 oz of formula, it takes 12 hours for the lactose enzyme to break the lactose down. Naturally keep the prepared formulas in the refrigerator. If you need to use immediately, 5 drops per 4 oz formula.
Another product that helps cut down gas and colic are Dr. Brown’s glass bottles. Their bottle system minimizes air as your baby feeds. I don’t recommend plastic. Plastic when heated in the sterilizer, will release chemicals which your child will be exposed to.
If your baby has rashes, eczema, or psoriasis. It may be common, but it is NOT normal. We have 3 main ways to break down toxins and remove from the body, your liver, kidneys, and the skin. Babies don’t have a fully developed liver and kidney system yet therefore any toxins they are exposed through baby formula, laundry detergent (majority made from petroleum), fabric softener (petroleum based), soap, lotions, etc will show up on their skin. Remove the offender and you’ll notice your baby skin will clear up.
I advise caution against Soy milk based formula. Soy acts as a pseudo-estrogen. Meaning, it resembles similar to estrogen hormone. Children have a minute amount and production increases at puberty. Babies are not meant to be subjected to such high level of hormones at a young age.
